Giving up the animal
Pets are accepted on business days from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and bringing the animal must be arranged by phone in advance.
PETS ARE ACCEPTED ONLY FROM THE SERVICE AREA OF THE TARTU SHELTER (look at page: Contacts of municipalities)
Giving up an animal is not free – the animal owner will pay the following costs in 2024:
- €49.00 (€3.50 per day for 14 storage days)
- parasite control:
€5.00 cat €10.00 a dog - €15.00 vaccination, if there isn’t a corresponding document with a veterinarian’s confirmation (vaccination must have been carried out at least 10 days before arrival at the shelter).
- €10.00 for chipping, if the animal arrives from a municipality where chipping is mandatory, but it has not been done (for example, Tartu city, Tartu municipality, etc.)
ATTENTION! The Tartu shelter is not required by law to keep an animal surrendered by its owner for 14 days.
If the animal turns out to be unmanageable/handleable, aggressive or its health condition isn’t suitable for rehoming, the shelter has the right to euthanize the animal earlier than 14 days.
An animal cannot be “temporarily kept” in our shelter – that is, the shelter does not function as a hotel for pets. This is due to the increased risk level of the shelter – the animal can get sick or be injured in the shelter. The shelter’s door is locked 24 hours a day due to incidents of theft – to get in, you have to call the shelter’s general phone from behind the door.
